Q&A for PGR Students Returning to Campus


1. Opening time of Library and how to access

The notice from the Library on 10th April stated that the Library will be open for study between 8:30 – 19:00 from 13 April 2020 and will resume its normal hour when students return to campus.

"In accordance with government and university directives, when using the library please follow these temporary regulations:

  • Body temperature will be measured when entering the library;

  • Library patrons should maintain a social distance of 1.5 metres from others;

  • It is recommended that patrons wear masks to reduce the risk of infection.

During epidemic prevention, please pay attention to your health and the health of others. Thanks you for your cooperation.

2. Opening time of PhD rooms

The PhD rooms are open as usual; however please do make sure the windows and doors are open to ensure the offices have sufficient air circulation. 

Please also pay attention to your self-protection. Self-protection posters will be posted for your reference; you can also find more information via the link.

 

3. Opening time of labs

The opening hours and access process will be the same as usual from 29th April onwards.

 

4. Time of annual review

Please check with your supervisor and faculty PGR administrator regarding the arrangement of annual review.

In general please refer to the email which has sent to you earlier by the Dean of GS: 

“In terms of your annual review report submissions, many of you have expressed concerns that you may not be able to submit the report on time.   Your faculty will be getting back to you soon on the annual review dates and the annual review period will be 1-2 month from May 2020 (which is the usual annual review time period). 

FOSE has decided that PhD students will submit their annual review report at the end of June while FoB/FHSS will get back to you soon. 

But in principal, we will take account of the period when university is closed in deciding the annual review submission deadline and so we will extend the submission date by 1-2 months.  Specific dates will be confirmed by your faculty once we know when the campus is re-opening.  

I look forward to seeing all doctoral researchers back to campus in the very near future, and please do not hesitate to write email directly to me if you have other concerns/queries.  ”

 

5. Must we return in 26 -28 April? If we are not able to return during that time, shall we write to Hub to ask for absence? Shall we inform our supervisors?

Please refer to the following policies on annual leave if you wish to apply for not returning to the campus and make sure you communicate with your supervisors regarding this issue.

“The University recognises the importance of taking holiday for the health and wellbeing of students engaged in postgraduate research.  This should be taken in line with School expectations (for example not taking leave during postgraduate training courses, School research events, seminars etc.), any contractual obligations (for example Research Council terms and conditions), and by arrangement with supervisors.  As a guide, postgraduate research students may normally take up to 25 days holiday in each year plus public and University holidays.”
