In recent days, Dr. Maycon Sedrez of the Department of Architecture and Built Environment (ABE) has been working hard. He has made good use of our 3D printing facilities and digital innovations in the CSET.
A good side of the digital revolution is sharing and collaboration. People will design things together and the internet facilitates the sharing of ideas. Many small scale objects are being designed to respond to COVID-19. This simple innovation, face mask extender, helps with the pain in the back of the ears for those using masks full time. At thingverse.com you can find this and other open-source hacks to download. Dr. Sedrez selected the file from ‘Chrisreichl’ to test on our 3D printers.
He then 3D-printed some samples and distributed them to our colleagues at UNNC's Clinic and Mail Room. They were very happy!
“I believe this situation presents a lot about the future of architecture and design, in which solutions can be shared, replicated, transformed and adapted”, says Dr. Sedrez. The production of things will move from mass production to mass customization, and architects have a great challenge ahead.
This has proven that education is more than just sitting in the classrooms. This represents the excellent spirit of ABE.
