On 27-30 Sep 2019, Sino-Japan Workshop on Geotechnical Engineering Materials and Technology & 8th National Workshop of Young Geotechnical Scholars was successfully held in Ningbo.
This workshop was co-organised by University of Nottingham Ningbo China and Ningbo University, and it was sponsored by Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, one of the most influential society in geotechnical engineering in China. Staff and postgraduate students from the Department of Civil Engineering and the Centre for Granular Materials and Geotechnology participated in the organisation of the workshop.
This year, the workshop focused on the theme of new materials and new technologies for underground structures. It gathered more than 150 young scholars, experienced engineers and world-leading academics in geotechnical engineering from China and Japan.
Professor Tao Wu, the Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering delivered a welcome speech to all guests. He mentioned that we are seeking more opportunities for research innovation and knowledge transfer with top institutes and companies.
The Department of Civil Engineering also presented recent research outcomes in the workshop. Dr Yunming Yang was invited to give a keynote speech titled “The Principal Stress Rotation in Geotechnical Engineering”. Dr Shu Liu and other two PhD students also showcased their research projects.
The workshop built a platform for experts and young researchers to communicate and brainstorm over the theme. The recent research achievements and cutting-edge technologies in the field of geotechnical engineering have successfully struck a responsive chord among the audiences and with that the workshop was a complete success.
Centre for Granular Materials and Geotechnology
The research group consists of UNNC staff members in geotechnical engineering and civil engineering materials, currently including 3 academic staff, 1 research fellow and several PhD students. The group has published more than 50 SCI papers and have filed 2 patents over the past few years. The group has also been actively driving the knowledge transfer between industry and academia.
