On 9 and 10 April 2026, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) hosted H.E. Sergio Cabrera, Colombian Ambassador to China and renowned film director, for two special events that brought together cinema, diplomacy, education and business.
A highlight of the visit was a screening of Cabrera’s award-winning film The Strategy of the Snail, followed by a lively post-screening discussion led by the Ambassador himself. Attended by around 70 participants, the event offered a rare opportunity for students, staff and guests to hear first-hand from an internationally recognised filmmaker about the inspirations behind his work, the art of storytelling, and the wider cultural questions explored in the film.
The visit also featured a roundtable discussion with representatives from the Ningbo Museum and local enterprises, opening up conversations on cultural exchange and future collaboration between China and Colombia. The discussion underscored the value of bringing together voices from academia, the creative industries and business to explore shared opportunities and strengthen international connections.
Among those attending the roundtable were Professor Giampaolo Buticchi, Vice Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange; Dr Mary J. Ainslie, Associate Dean for Global Engagement and Partnerships; Dr Filippo Gilardi, Head of School of International Communications; and Mr Adam Xu, Deputy Director of Knowledge Exchange. External guests included Mr Liang Zhang of Ningbo Museum, Mr Yong Ren of Ningbo Haierxin Optoelectronics Technology, and Mr Chao Zhao of Mingxing Technology Development.
By combining film, dialogue and cross-sector engagement, the events created a dynamic platform for learning and exchange. Participants gained insights into both the craft of filmmaking and the role of cultural diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation.
The events were coordinated by Dr Mercedes Vázquez from the School of International Communications and Mr Neil Ren from Research and Knowledge Exchange Office.
