On 6 October 2026, the FoSE Liberal Arts Workshop presented a special concert at the D.H. Lawrence Auditorium, UNNC, marking the tenth anniversary of the passing of Xu Xiaoying, a renowned inheritor of the Zhejiang school of guqin. Organised as part of the UNNC FOSE Youth League Committee's Liberal Arts Workshop series, “A Journey into music and sensibility”, the event brought together guqin players from Hangzhou and Ningbo, members of the Ningbo Guqin Society, and students and staff from across the campus.
The concert featured three generations of performers — from senior disciples of Xu Xiaoying to young learners just beginning their musical journeys. Their programme ranged from the serene Flowing Water to the spirited Spring Breeze, performed on guqin alongside konghou, xiao, guzheng and drums, creating a rich yet restrained soundscape.
The FoSE Liberal Arts Workshop is a long-running initiative designed to bring arts and humanities into the lives of science and engineering students. Previous sessions have included piano classes and classical poetry appreciation, with the guqin concert offering a new window into traditional Chinese aesthetics and the idea of cultural inheritance.
For many students, the evening offered something rare. "The quiet, unhurried tone of the guqin cleared away the noise," said Qianhuai Sheng, a student at FoSE. "After the music ended, it stayed with me for a long time."
Alumna Yi Wei, returning to the auditorium after eleven years, reflected: "Listening to the senior musicians, I felt the continuity of a cultural thread — a memory shared across different generations of UNNC students."
Through events like this, the UNNC FOSE Youth League Committee continues to encourage dialogue between science and the arts, adding a humanistic dimension to the student experience.
