Department of Civil Engineering

Civil engineering touches just about every kind of structure you can think about, from bridges to roads, to tunnels and skyscrapers. It is a discipline that has real-life applications in limitless aspects of modern living. A career in civil engineering allows you to be part of this, playing a role in shaping the built environment for generations to come. A career in civil engineering offers you responsibility, from ensuring the safety of others to determining the success of your project. A career in civil engineering is both rewarding and fulfilling - average starting salaries for civil engineering graduates are significantly higher than for other professions.

The Department of Civil Engineering provides a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (2+2, 4+0) programme which is concerned with the techniques and procedures by which dams and reservoirs, water supply and sewage disposal systems, power stations, ports, offshore works, transport systems, bridges, tall buildings and other structures are planned, designed, built, surveyed, tested, operated, maintained and decommissioned. The course includes a broad range of activities including field courses, individual projects, design work and laboratory work.

Accreditation

JBM

Joint Board of Moderators accredited BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering programme

On 30 October 2015, the JBM confirmed that the BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering is fully accredited. Following JBM's accreditation visit to the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) between 18-19 May 2015, BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering is now formally accredited by the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Engineers on behalf of the Engineering Council to fully meet the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meet the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

This is an outstanding achievement for the Department of Civil Engineering, confirming that BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering at UNNC is delivered to a  very high standard.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
