On February 26, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) unveiled Asia’s first Arnold and Richter Cine Technik (ARRI)-standard Virtual Production (VP) and Motion Capture (MC) Studio in collaboration with ARRI, a global leader in film technology. The studio, equipped with cutting-edge technologies such as real-time LED projection walls and ARRI’s Alexa 35 camera system, aims to nurture the next generation of film talent at UNNC and beyond.

During the launch, a live demonstration was presented, where UNNC students operated the control systems while an actor performed in front of an LED screen, seamlessly blending live action with a virtual modern street scene. The demonstration highlighted how the studio’s advanced technologies support creative potential and innovation in film production.

Beyond the introduction of state-of-the-art equipment, the studio also further builds on UNNC’s recent efforts to integrate world-class film education.

In January, the university launched Asia’s first ARRI-certified camera system module, focusing on advanced equipment and techniques. The studio also supports UNNC’s new MA course in Digital Screen Production, launching in 2025, which covers directing, cinematography, editing, and VP.

Professor Catriona Morrison, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, highlighted the broader impact of the collaboration. “By partnering with a leading global firm like ARRI, we have taken a leap forward in enriching our academic offerings in film, media, and digital innovation. These facilities will blend academic excellence with real-world practice, equipping our students with the skills and experience they need to excel in a rapidly evolving creative economy,” she said.

In addition, the international staff working at the studio will bring in their resources and diverse perspectives, which is helping Ningbo establish itself as a recognised hub for filmmaking, introduced Dr Levi Dean, Director of the VP and MC Studio.

By bringing international expertise and resources to Ningbo, the studio positions UNNC as a centre for film innovation, offering film professionals in Ningbo and surrounding areas up-close access to cutting-edge VP technologies, expanding their career development opportunities. Additionally, this initiative will further promote the integration of industry, academia, and research.

Tiger Kang, Head of Solutions and Rental at ARRI Greater China, noted that over the coming months, ARRI experts will collaborate with UNNC to develop specialised workshops on VP workflows. “Through our global network, exceptional projects born here may find pathways to international festivals,” he added.
