Chen Yeting - a UNNC alumna’s story image1

From enrolling at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) in 2013 with aspirations of becoming a foreign correspondent to building a career spanning Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States, Chen’s journey reflects how an international learning environment can open doors worldwide. Now working at Google’s headquarters in Los Angeles, she credits her time at UNNC with laying the foundation for her development.

“I soon realised that UNNC gave me something invaluable—the courage to ask questions, and the understanding that knowing how to ask is more important than simply obtaining answers,” she said. Chen noted that the university’s emphasis on critical thinking and its all-English teaching environment helped her gain confidence in communication and independent analysis.

During her studies, she represented China in the APEC “Voices of the Future” programme after placing second nationally, competing with students from leading universities across the country. She later pursued a master’s degree at Imperial College London before beginning her career in Europe and eventually joining Google.

Chen highlighted that her experiences at UNNC—including debating, international exchange and a diverse campus culture—prepared her to adapt to different countries and workplaces. “Looking back, my time at UNNC built my confidence and openness, allowing me to face new challenges with courage,” she said.

Beyond her professional achievements, she continues to engage in volunteering and community service, reflecting values she first developed during her undergraduate years.

Her story illustrates how UNNC’s global outlook, emphasis on critical thinking and diverse opportunities can equip students with the skills and confidence to pursue international careers.
