The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) recently hosted its Language and Culture Week, a vibrant celebration of global traditions, sports, and arts. From French pétanque to German pretzel baking, the event highlighted the rich cultural diversity that enriches life at UNNC.

Throughout the week, students of different backgrounds, languages, and cultures came together to participate in a variety of activities, transforming the abstract concept of "internationalisation" into a vivid and tangible experience. This dynamic exchange of traditions and ideas showcased the unique international atmosphere that defines UNNC.

One of the standout activities was pétanque, a traditional French sport where players aim to land metal balls closest to a target. French teacher Geoffrey demonstrated the sport’s techniques, emphasising precision and strategy, as students eagerly participated.

Food also played a central role in the festivities. At the German pretzel baking workshop, Aurelius, a German student, shared the art of crafting Bavarian-style pretzels, filling the air with the sweet aroma of freshly baked dough.

Meanwhile, in the Japanese cultural experience zone, second-year student Chen Gong donned traditional armour and wielded a wooden sword, exploring the balance of strength and spirit in samurai culture.

Music and performance added another layer to the cultural experience. The French Musical Performance featured classic songs from renowned musicals like Le Roi Soleil and Le Rouge et le Noir, performed by students. Xin Zhang, an engineering student with a passion for French opera, couldn’t help but sing along. "I’m a fan of French musicals and enjoy learning French songs in my spare time," she said.

The event also highlighted how international traditions have taken root at UNNC. Disc sports, introduced to the campus two decades ago, have become a defining activity, with alumni founding Yikun Sports, Asia’s first World Flying Disc Federation-certified company. Today, UNNC students continue to excel in disc sports, with some even representing China in international competitions.

As the final pétanque ball landed and the campus clock tower chimed, the echoes of cultural exchange lingered, reminding everyone of UNNC’s unique power to bring the world together.
