two new globally leading landmark buildings image1

As part of its ongoing commitment to enhancing teaching, research, and campus life as a leading global institution, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) officially broke ground on two major construction projects — a new teaching building and a new sports centre — on 16 October 2025. These two landmark developments mark a significant step forward in UNNC’s continued dedication to providing world-class education, pioneering research and a vibrant campus environment.

The new teaching building, located on the south bank of the Nottingham River, will stand opposite UNNC’s iconic Yang Fujia Building and Siyuan Auditorium. Comprising four interconnected structures with generous public spaces, it is conceived as a dynamic hub for learning, experimentation, and innovation. The facility will feature smart classrooms, collaborative spaces, advanced laboratories, and dedicated work areas for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, fostering innovative teaching and interdisciplinary learning. The project will deliver a 30% increase in usable riverfront space and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2028.

UNNC is also making a major investment in the construction of a world-class Sport, Activity and Wellness facility designed to redefine the student and staff experience. Whilst providing technologically enhanced facilities for traditional sports such as basketball, bouldering, climbing and squash, the centre will reflect global trends and introduce contemporary and vibrant sport offerings including an indoor skateboard bowl and e-sports hub. The Centre will also host elite student athletes and provide professional rehabilitation and wellness spaces. Expected to open in 2027, this globally advanced facility will provide an inclusive and inspiring environment that promotes the physical, mental, and social development of the entire university community.

Throughout the design and construction process, UNNC has embedded the principles of sustainability and inclusivity. The new facilities will incorporate advanced energy-efficient technologies, environmentally responsible materials and inclusive design features to create an eco-friendly, accessible, and people-centred campus for all.

More than a physical expansion, this development represents a strategic investment in UNNC’s future — one that will attract world-class talent, drive innovation, advance frontier research, deepen interdisciplinary collaboration and enrich the overall campus experience for generations to come.
