Li Yiwei, an alumnus of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), has graduated from Harvard Business School and will join the University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor this June.
A graduate of UNNC’s International Economics and Trade programme, Li was the only student admitted worldwide to Harvard Business School’s PhD track in Management Accounting in 2021 — one of the most competitive doctoral pathways in global business education.
Li credits UNNC as the starting point of his academic journey. During his undergraduate studies, he developed a strong interest in labour economics through hands-on research opportunities and close collaboration with faculty members. Beyond the classroom, experiences such as debating, interdisciplinary discussions and overseas volunteering helped him build the communication, critical thinking and cross-cultural skills that continue to shape his career today.
Following graduation, Li gained teaching and research experience at McGill University and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), where he worked closely with companies on real-world management research before progressing to Harvard.
Reflecting on the rise of artificial intelligence, Li believes the most valuable qualities for future graduates will be the soft skills that technology cannot replace.
“Beyond teaching knowledge, I hope to encourage students to participate, practise and exchange ideas — developing the communication and critical thinking skills needed in the real world,” he said.
Li’s journey reflects UNNC’s commitment to combining academic excellence with global perspectives and practical experience, preparing students to thrive in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world.
