Environmental Engineering Awarded Provincial Level First Class UG Programme

11 March 2021

The Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China has announced the 2020 National and Provincial ‘First Class’ Programmes. The BEng (Hons) Environmental Engineering was awarded Provincial Level ‘First Class’ Programmes.

The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering teaches Environmental Engineering programme; it has accomplished teaching staff and is equipped with cutting-edge facilities. The curriculum was designed and developed jointly by UNNC, the University of Nottingham’s UK and Malaysia campuses. The curriculum follows the University’s Quality Manual and the regulations of the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education.

In 2016, the programme received international accreditation from both the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3) and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). It is so far the only Environmental Engineering undergraduate programme in the domestic China which is accredited by these two international authorities.

The programme introduces fundamental engineering sciences including heat and mass transfer and fluid mechanics. It equips students with professional skills needed to address the environmental issues. Through the practical projects like Engineering Week, students will have a chance to further enhance their knowledge and transferable skills. One of the Final Year modules, Design Project, has been recognized by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China as the first batch of National-Level First Class Undergraduate Module.

With a good balance of classroom lectures and “hands-on” practical experience, our graduates leave us with the skills and knowledge that employers really want. From the statistics of class of 2020, more than 90% of Environmental Engineering graduates have been enrolled into QS Top 50 universities, like Imperial College London, University College London and National University of Singapore.

“The study in the UNNC has laid a solid foundation for his academic and career development,” said Yejiong Yu, who graduated from Environmental Engineering in 2016 and entered University of Oxford for PhD studies. In 2020, Yejiong as a member of the Oxford rapid viral RNA test team, has been awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering's President's Special Awards for Pandemic Service for exceptional achievements in the fight against COVID-19.

When speaking of his undergraduate study, Yejiong recalled that he appreciated the experience of applying knowledge to solve practical problems through various activities like Engineering Week and practical lab sessions.

“The study experience at UNNC equipped me with cutting-edge knowledge as well as transferable skills,” he said. “More importantly, I had numerous opportunities to explore my interests. I soon figured out my passion and applied early for a PhD programme.”
