Integrated circuits are crucial for mobiles.
The UNNC-Mentor Graphics Integrated Circuit Laboratory, which is sponsored by Mentor Graphics Corporation, will provide UNNC students with in-depth knowledge of the design methodologies needed to create integrated circuits.
As part of a mutual agreement, Mentor has donated more than $10M worth of electronic design automation (EDA) software, which will support the laboratory in becoming a centre of excellence for future engineers in the region.
In addition to donated software, Mentor will provide online support and material to enable UNNC to develop a teaching and research programme in the design of very large-scale ICs.
A subset of electrical and computer engineering, integrated circuits are crucial in the manufacture of digital devices such as computers and mobile phones.
The software has been donated as part of Mentor’s Higher Education Program (HEP), which provides design tools and support to universities and colleges, to ensure that engineering graduates enter the industry proficient in state-of-the-art tools and methodologies.
Professor Gethin Roberts, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at UNNC, said: “This laboratory brings our students a brilliant opportunity to study the application of industry-leading electronic design tools during their four years here.
“It guarantees our students are knowledgeable in the most current design tools and methodologies and well-prepared to advance China’s rapid growing IC design industry.”
Danny Perng, vice president, PacRim, Mentor Graphics, said: “Highly talented electronics engineers are in great demand worldwide, particularly in fast-growing China.
“Our collaboration with Nottingham will help ensure that engineering students at the university are well-prepared for their careers in IC design.”
Mentor Graphics Corporation is a world leader in electronic hardware and software design solutions, providing products, consulting services and support for the world’s most successful electronics and semiconductor companies.
In recognition of its collaboration with UNNC, and of his contributions to business and the technology industry, Mentor Graphics president Greg Hinckley was awarded an honorary professorship at UNNC.
