16 October 2024
According to the most recent statistical data for the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database unveiled by the global professional information services company Clarivate Analytics, a new discipline - the discipline of Environment/Ecology - of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FoSE) of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) has entered ESI's prestigious global top 1% discipline list.
This is another discipline of FoSE that ranks among the top 1% of ESI's global list. It highlights the continuous progress of FoSE in the field of Environment/Ecology and also makes an important contribution to global environmental governance and sustainable development.
In recent years, FoSE has continuously strengthened its discipline construction and improved its research capabilities. For instance, the ESI global ranking of Engineering has moved from the top 1% in 2019 to 0.5% in 2021 and further to 0.23% as of September this year, achieving a remarkable advancement; and Materials Science to 0.92%.
According to the data of the SciVal database in 2024, the paper impact (FWCI) of the Environmental Science of UNNC reached 1.67, which is already a global leader and comparable to top universities such as Harvard University (1.68) and Cornell University (1.62). In addition, 52.8% of the papers in this discipline were published in the top 10% of the world's top journals, and 22.0% of the papers entered the top 10% of the world's citations, surpassing world-class universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, showing strong scientific research strength and international influence.
Professor Laura Bishop, Vice Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange, praised the achievements of FoSE: "Being in the top 1% of the ESI rankings for the Ecology/Environment subject demonstrates our research excellence and impact, and we take great pride in this achievement. This recognition reflects not only our continued progress in these academic fields, but also underscores our commitment to addressing global environmental challenges. We will continue to drive innovation and deepen collaborations with academic and industrial partners worldwide to tackle these challenges, contributing to sustainable development and societal well-being."
The success of Environment and Ecology at the FoSE in the ESI Top 1% list is due to the joint efforts and continuous innovation of all faculty staff. This achievement fully demonstrates FoSE’s outstanding performance in terms of scientific research quality and international academic influence. Professor Faith Chan, Champion of Environment/Ecology ESI Discipline Group, said: "Our research group has long been committed to the study of global environmental issues, especially in the areas of climate change, microplastic pollution, water resources protection and other important breakthroughs." In the past few years, the research group has actively participated in many international research cooperation projects, and the research results have not only been published in top international academic journals but also provided important scientific basis for global environmental policy.
In the past few years, the research team of FoSE actively publishes high-level papers, which in top international journals are widely cited. Among the papers published in 2023, 49% were published in top 10% journals. 14% of the publications were listed in top 10% most-cited worldwide. By organizing faculty staff to participate in international conferences and exchange cutting-edge research results, FoSE encourages them to collaborate extensively with their global counterparts in order to gain wider recognition and citations, and to enhance their academic impact.
At present, FoSE’s Environment/Ecology discipline is focused on the following directions: reservoir ecosystems, glacier changes, paleoecological studies, and environmental protection. When it comes to addressing carbon peaking and carbon neutrality policies, the research group explores innovative solutions and provides support for sustainable policies.
In addition, FoSE is committed to promoting deeper interaction with society, transforming scientific research outcomes into practical applications, thus enhances public awareness and participation in environmental protection. Looking ahead, FoSE will continue to adhere to the concept of scientific innovation, maintain its leading position in the field of environment and ecology, consolidate its brand influence in the field of environmental science, and further contribute to global environmental protection and sustainable development.
