Professor Lin YE visited UNNC and gave a lecture

19 March 2021

On the Wednesday morning, 17th March 2021, at the New International Conference Centre of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Professor Lin Ye from the University of Sydney gave a lecture entitled “3D printing on Continuous Fibre Composites – Issues and Challenges”. Professor Tao Wu, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering; Professor Xiaosu Yi, Li Dak Sum Chair Professor of Advanced Materials and Composites; Associate Professor Xiaoling Liu, Deputy Head of Composites Research Group; Professor Hong Li, Founder of Jiangsu Jicui Composites Equipment Research Institute Co., Ltd., and more than 30 other staff and students from the Faculty participated in this event.

Lin Ye currently is a full professor at the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering and the Director of the Centre for Advanced Materials Technology of the University of Sydney. His major research interests are in the areas of composites science and technology, smart materials and structures, nano-materials and nano-composites, structural integrity and durability He has a citation number of 20000 and an H index of 73 (Google Scholars).

In the lecture, Professor Lin Ye introduced the advantages of fusion deposition moulding (FDM) 3D printing based on the principle of this method, and showed the microstructure and mechanical properties of polymer composites printed by this method through specific experimental diagrams. Through these charts, Professor Ye analysed step by step the differences in the internal structure of materials caused by different process steps, as well as the resulting differences in mechanical properties. He explained each part of the research in a profound and simple way, and proposed an effective method to improve the mechanical properties of printing materials. At the last, Professor Ye vividly explained the method of fibre position topology design in 3D printing through real columns. Professor Ye's explanation was simple and vivid, which brought a wonderful academic report to the attending students and staff. After the report, the staff and students also actively communicated with Professor Ye about their questions related to FDM 3D printing method, and all the students benefited a lot.

After the lecture, Professor Lin Ye was invited to visit the Composite Materials Laboratory, and had in-depth communication with Professor Xiaosu Yi, Associate Professor Xiaoling Liu and PhD students of Composites Research Group of UNNC.
