2026 UNNC International Women in Mathematics Day

    UNNC

More than 70 students from Ningbo high schools and their parents joined the celebration of International Women in Mathematics Day on May 10, 2026.

It's encouraging that UNNC's School of Mathematical Sciences, which was the first and only university in China to celebrate International Women in Mathematics Day in 2024 and 2025, has now been joined by Tsinghua University in 2026 - a positive sign that the initiative is gaining well-deserved recognition across the country.

Throughout the day, faculty members and student volunteers will guide participants through the joy of mathematical discovery – featuring ideas and activities that are rarely encountered in the usual classroom setting.

Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences Professor Hayk Mikayelyan opened the celebration with a speech. After the speech, Dr. Olga opened a discussion about the path of mathematics in the era of AI. Then a student-run team presented the 2026 UNNC Mathematics Festival - featuring mathematical games, discovery, and arts-in-mathematics activities for high-school students from Ningbo.

In the early afternoon, Fellow of the Royal Society Professor John King (University of Nottingham, UK) gave a public talk, which was followed by a special screening of the short film "Je suis Sophie Germain" and a student-run discussion.

This celebration was free and open to all participants with registration. All students, educators, and mathematics enthusiasts were warmly welcomed to join the event and explore the endless possibilities of mathematical thinking.
