2025 International Women in Mathematics Day at UNNC

    DB A05

International Women in Mathematics Day (IWM Day) is a worldwide initiative launched in May 2019, commemorating Maryam Mirzakhani, the first female winner of the Fields Medal—the most prestigious prize in mathematics. In 2024, the School of Mathematical Sciences at UNNC proudly joined this movement, becoming the only university in China to officially celebrate women in mathematics.

This year’s event, held on May 11, combined the 2025 UNNC Mathematics Festival with two plenary talks by young female mathematicians:

Kexin Liu and Qiushi Gao (supervised by Dr. Olga Danilkina): "Anisotropic Star Models in Astrophysics"

Jiajing Wang (supervised by Dr. Hamidreza Daneshpajouh): "The Basel Problem"

The UNNC Mathematics Festival, a large-scale outreach program, welcomed high-school students from Zhejiang province. A female student support team, guided by Dr. Olga Danilkina, facilitated the event. Key contributors included:

Xintong Jiang (senior facilitator)

Jie Luo, Jing Wang, Zengyuge Zhang, and Shuyi Ma

Their engaging presentations shared mathematical passion with 60+ students and parents, inspiring the next generation.

Dr. Olga Danilkina’s Message:

"Mathematics knows no gender - only curiosity and dedication matter. Yet, women often face greater challenges balancing academic careers and family life. Our goals for IWM Day are to raise awareness of women’s contributions to mathematics, celebrate their achievements, and empower young female students to present their work confidently”.
