From June 11 to 15, at CVPR 2025, one of the premier global conferences in computer vision and artificial intelligence held in Tennessee, USA, Professor Qiu Guoping, Vice Provost for Education and Student Experience (ESE) at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), presented a pioneering AI-powered smart camera technology. His research team’s innovative solution promises to transform the future of photography by seamlessly integrating intelligent automation and enhanced visual processing.

Their paper, “Towards Smart Point-and-Shoot Photography” presents the Smart Point-and-Shoot (SPAS) system, a real-time computational photography framework that delivers dynamic composition guidance, such as “rotate 10° left” or “tilt up 5° ”, enabling intuitive camera alignment and facilitating the capture of aesthetically optimised, professional-grade images.

To power the SPAS system, the research team created a large-scale image dataset enriched with camera pose information and developed an innovative multimodal neural network. This advanced AI model can assess photo composition and offer real-time guidance on how to adjust the camera angle for the best shot.

Professor Qiu emphasised that the SPAS system is not only beneficial to individual users but also marks a significant step forward in AI-powered photography automation. “Whether for daily snapshots, travel photography, or even short video creation, the SPAS system is always ready to empower the user to capture the most memorable moments from an utmost optimal angle. This marks a new era where anyone can take professional-quality photos, capturing life’s most important moments anytime, anywhere,” he said.
