A University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) alumnus has transformed a passion for exploring the world into a career at the forefront of artificial intelligence, becoming the first Europe-based employee of leading AI company MiniMax.
Miao Zhengxuan, who graduated with a degree in English Language and Applied Linguistics, now plays a key role in the company’s European operations, supporting the global expansion of cutting-edge Chinese technology.
A defining influence during his time at UNNC was the late Professor Yang Fujia’s message to graduates: to find their own “spark” in life and use it to make a positive impact on others. The idea stayed with Miao long after graduation, becoming a guiding principle as he pursued opportunities across continents and industries. Today, he credits that mindset—combined with the curiosity, creativity and global perspective nurtured at UNNC—with giving him the confidence to embrace new challenges and thrive in one of the world’s fastest-moving sectors.
Reflecting on his journey, Miao credits UNNC with helping him develop the curiosity, creativity and global outlook that have shaped both his personal and professional growth. During his time at the University, he immersed himself in student societies, founded a music label with fellow students, participated in an Africa-based volunteering programme, and embraced an education that encouraged independent thinking and innovation.
These experiences helped him build the adaptability, confidence and intercultural understanding that would later support his transition from a humanities graduate to a professional working at the forefront of AI innovation.
