4 July:  The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) signed a framework agreement yesterday with China Telecom and Huawei to establish a 5G network on campus.

UNNC's campus will be one of the first in China to enable students and staff to access the next-generation 5G network. It is expected to be applied in both academic and residential areas to aid teaching, research, management and the on-campus living experience.

Establishment of the 5G network will involve research collaborations with UNNC on cloud computing, AI (artificial intelligence) and AR/VR (augmented reality/virtual reality) technologies. The application of 5G could even go beyond UNNC.

The three parties agreed to set up an incubator platform at UNNC to further promote 5G-focused research and knowledge transfer.

Xiao Lin, Head of UNNC Logistics Management, commented that the installation work would begin this summer.

China Telecom will mainly provide talent and internet infrastructure, with Huawei offering new 5G products and expert consultation.
