Double Ninth Festival celebration

11 October 2024

At noon on 11th October, the Confucius Institute and more than 30 faculty members from NUBS China celebrated the annual Double Ninth Festival. At the event, the Confucius Institute invited Qiu Xingmei, a special-class teacher from Gulin Vocational High School, to lead everyone to make delicious Chongyang cakes. Chongyang cake has been recorded in writing during the Southern Dynasties. Rice flour, fruit and other raw materials are used. The preparation method varies from place to place, but baking and steaming are the most frequently used methods. Today, Ms Qiu presented how to make a steamed Chongyang cake.

Through a short video, participants were able to experience the history and heritage of the Double Ninth Festival. It was particularly impressive that in 2013 the Chinese government assigned Double Ninth Festival as the Day of the Elderly. This practice fully embodies the excellent tradition of respecting the elderly of the Chinese nation, and has been highly appreciated by the participants. Everyone expressed that they enjoyed the event very much and hoped that they would have more opportunities to learn more about traditional Chinese food and culture.
