Jinyao Chu, born in 1966 in Wujiang, Jiangsu, is an Academician of the European Academy of Sciences, an IEEE Fellow, a National Distinguished Expert, and a Changjiang Scholar Chair Professor. He has previously served as a Finland Distinguished Professor under the Academy of Finland and Business Finland, as well as a Humboldt AI Chair Professor under the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
He obtained his Bachelor’s (1988), Master’s (1991), and Ph.D. (1996) degrees in Engineering from Zhejiang University and later earned a Ph.D. in Engineering from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, in 2001. From 1991 to 1997, he worked as an Assistant Professor, Lecturer, and Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Zhejiang University. From 1998 to 1999, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Department of Industrial Engineering at New Jersey State University, USA. From 2001 to 2010, he served as a Senior Scientist and Principal Scientist at Honda (Europe) Research Institute in Germany.
In 2010, he joined the Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey, UK, as a Chair Professor in Computational Intelligence, and was promoted to Surrey Distinguished Professor in 2019. From 2021 to 2023, he held the Humboldt AI Chair Professorship at the Faculty of Engineering, Bielefeld University, Germany.
He previously served as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Cognitive and Developmental Systems and is currently the President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. In October 2023, he joined the School of Engineering at Westlake University full-time as a Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence and founded the Trustworthy and General Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
