18 December 2024

The Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge 2024 ended recently, and the student team from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), known as "HML" and consisting of Danxu Zhang, Yang Li, Jingfeng Li, Xinyu Wang, and Yuxuan Wang, achieved breakthrough results in this international competition. With outstanding trading strategies and excellent teamwork, they won the championship in the Asia and Oceania region, and were awarded third place worldwide. This is the first time that a Chinese mainland university has won the championship in the Asia and Oceania region of the Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge.

In addition to the "HML" team, two other teams from UNNC also performed well. The team "talented mind", consisting entirely of Year 1 students from the Nottingham University Business School China, including Jiayi Wang, Xiaoya Tong, Yiran Song, and Zhuoyan Yu, earned ninth place globally. Meanwhile, the "Superladies" team, including Yiling Guo, Zihan Ou, Yuwei Qian, Xuanchen Shen, and Xintong Dong, comprising second-year students from both the Business School and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, also achieved thirteenth place globally.

Organized by Bloomberg L.P., the Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge is a university investment competition that takes place within the Bloomberg Terminal. The competition provides students with a realistic investment environment and comprehensively tests their abilities in market analysis, investment decision-making, and teamwork. It attracts top university students worldwide to form teams and participate, making it highly influential globally. According to reports, the Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge 2024 drew a total of 2,520 teams and 13,029 participants.

At the beginning of the competition, each team received a virtual investment fund of one million US dollars. During the month-long competition, participants needed to collect and analyze various data, make judgments on global economic trends, develop trading strategies, and implement simulated investments based on factors such as recent developments in different industries and a company's current performance. Ultimately, the ranking is determined based on the investment returns of each participating team at the end of the competition.

It is worth mentioning that the Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge 2024 requires the use of Bloomberg Terminals. According to the competition rules, each Bloomberg Terminal can correspond to two participating teams. The Nottingham University Business School China has world-class facilities. The 12 Bloomberg Terminals in the Fintech Lab provided powerful support for the 24 student teams participating in the competition, ensuring that they could fully demonstrate their strength in the competition. In addition, Dr Tingting Ying, Assistant Professor in Economics, provided valuable strategy advice and support to the participating students as a faculty advisor, helping them stay calm and make accurate decisions in the intense competition.

Moreover, the Student Engagement and Employability Development (SEED) Scheme of the Business School also provided strong support to the students participating in this competition. Through a series of diverse extracurricular programmes, career exploration lectures, diversified practical activities, and business competition support, the SEED Scheme helps students explore their potential, improve their overall quality, and lay a solid foundation for their future careers. It is this comprehensive support that has enabled UNNC students to stand out on the international stage.
