PhD Programme of The University of Nottingham Ningbo, China

 

The University is aiming to recruit 40 PhD students on a full-time and part-time basis for the 2011/12 session.

The PhD programme offers flexible supervision between UNNC and the University of Nottingham UK (UNUK). Students will be registered at UNNC but depending on the proposed research, students may be required to spend part of their studies at UNUK. On graduation, students will be awarded a University of Nottingham UK degree which is fully recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

PhD supervision will be offered across the University, but with the focus on areas of research strength including :

  • International Studies (International Relations, Comparative History & Politics, Area Studies, International Political Sociology, History, World History, History of Empires & Colonialism, etc)
  • English Studies (Applied Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Literary Studies, Approaches/theoretical Orientations, etc.)
  • International Business (Strategy, International Trading, Investment, Marketing, Finance, Economy, Management, etc.)
  • Computer Science (Machine Learning, Search Paradigms, Functional Programming, Computational Intelligence in Transport, Graphical Representations for Cross-Cultural Communication, etc.)
  • International Communications (Literature, Cultural Studies, Digital Media, Journalism, Logistics, Linguistic Research, etc.)
  • Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies (CSET) (Solar Energy, Energy Storage, Green Technologies, Façade Engineering, Sustainable Energy Transport Systems, Low Carbon Buildings, etc.)
  • Engineering (Civil, Chemical, Environment, Mechanical, Materials Eng, Sustainable Manufacturing Technology and Systems is a special focus for the division)
  • Economics (International Trade, International Economics)

Study Period

Full-time: normally 3-4 years

Part-time: normally 4-6 years

Tuition Fees

  • For periods spent at UNNC, the PhD fee will be RMB 70,000 per annum by Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities students and RMB 80,000 for Science and Engineering students. Non-Chinese nationals will pay RMB 80,000 and RMB 90,000 respectively.
  • The part-time fee will be 50% of the full-time fee per annum.
  • Any full semester spent in the UK will be charged at 2010 International student rate reduced by 10%.
  • Travel and accommodation is to be paid for by the student.

Bursaries and Scholarships

  • The University provides, on a competitive basis a significant number of bursaries. RMB 20,000 per annum for a maximum of 3 years (full-time) and RMB 10,000 per annum for a maximum of 6 years (part-time). Bursaries will be awarded on the basis of the quality of candidates' applications. The bursary is renewable, subject to the annual review.
  • A significant number of full and partial scholarships covering tuition fees and living costs may also be available for exceptionally qualified candidates. The number of scholarships varies from year to year, in the 2010/2011 there are 12 full scholarships available for top students, 5 targeted to Engineering, 2 for computer science and 5 more for other disciplines.
  • Graduate Teaching Assistantships, combining paid teaching with PhD research may be available for suitable candidates.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for PhD programmes are generally required to hold an honours degree at 2:1 level or above (or international equivalent) in an appropriate subject. Normally, applicants with a degree from a Chinese University should have completed a Master's degree. Holders of first class honours degree or equivalent from selected Universities will be considered. Evidence of relevant personal, professional and educational experience may be taken into consideration.

You will need to include the following documents together with your application form:

1. a research proposal;

2. degree certificates and official transcripts showing marks;

3. two references in signed and sealed envelopes;

4. IELTS or TOFEL test score;

5. a copy of passport (a copy of ID for Chinese passport holder);

6. four passport sized colour photographs.

If there are original copies and photocopies of certificates for awards, works and essays, they may also be submitted.

Students whose first language is not English or their entry qualifications were not obtained from an institution where English is used as the medium of study are required to provide satisfactory evidence of their proficiency in English. Requirements for admission to the PhD programme can be 6.5 or 7.0 depending on the area of study.

  • Please note that the academic and English language requirements will depend upon the type of course applied for.

The Application Deadline

There is no deadline for receiving applications, however, the main admission dates are October, January, March and June of each year.
