On Wednesday 30th May 2018, Year 3 Civil Engineering students presented their designs for “On-Campus Hall of Residence” as part of their Civil and Structural Steel Design Project. Three groups developed their designs starting from agreed university requirements (e.g. to accommodate 600 students), carried out conceptual design, civils design, load estimation, and finished by structural steel element design to produce technical drawings for construction. The finale event was held on the Atrium of Sir Peter Mansfield Building where students showcased their 3D models of proposed designs and presented highlights of their designs to the Academics and fellow Students. Students used 3D printing, LEGO and Timber to build their 3D models.

The Civil and Structural Steel Design Project module (CIVE2053) is introduced in 2017-2018 academic year as part of University of Nottingham’s innovative restructuring of BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course. The new module implements project-based learning approach to familiarise University of Nottingham’s future Civil Engineers with real world problems and allow them to use knowledge they learn in various Civil Engineering Modules in real project for in-depth and constructive learning. Students also develop their interpersonal and networking skills in their teamwork.
