On 17 February 2025, the Doctoral Training Partnership workshop between the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) and the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIMM) was successfully held at The Nottingham Ningbo China Beacons of Excellence Research and Innovation Institute (CBI).
The workshop was hosted by Dr. Enrico Marsili, Academic Director of the DTP – SIMM programme. The workshop aimed to enhance understanding between the supervisors of UNNC and SIMM, strengthen academic exchanges and research cooperation, and lay a solid foundation for the continuous development and fruitful outcomes of the DTP programme.
Dr. Enrico Marsili led the visiting guests on a tour of several cutting-edge laboratories at the CBI, including the Human Eye Research Laboratory, the Centre for Smart Food Research, the Biofilm Laboratory, the Bioprospecting and Microbiome Laboratory, and the Analytical Testing Centre. The principal investigators of each laboratory introduced the equipment, research directions, and latest achievements of their labs, providing the participants with a more intuitive and in-depth understanding of UNNC's research capabilities and potential.
At the beginning of the workshop, Dr. Enrico Marsili welcomed the participants and reviewed the cooperation between the two institutions in the DTP programme. He encouraged everyone to explore new opportunities for cooperation based on existing collaborations and to inject new vitality into the programme.
Professor Yechun Xu, in charge of the DTP programme at SIMM, also provided a brief introduction to SIMM's research capabilities and talent cultivation system, expressing hope that both sides would further strengthen research cooperation and exchanges and deepen their DTP cooperation in the future.
Ms. Wang Ying, DTP Senior Manager in the Graduate School of UNNC, gave a detailed introduction to the overall situation of the programme and answered questions raised by supervisors from both sides.
During the academic exchange session, supervisors from both sides delivered excellent presentations on the latest research achievements of their respective teams. They engaged in in-depth discussions on potential areas of cooperation and actively sought opportunities for collaboration. Dr. He Min, the Director of the Graduate Education Office at SIMM, expressed satisfaction with the achievements of the DTP programme and confidence in its future development.
After the workshop, the supervisors from both sides had in-depth discussions on their research directions and interests, laying a good foundation for future collaborative research and academic interactions. The event provided a platform for in-depth exchanges between the supervisors and created valuable learning and growth opportunities for the PhD students involved in the DTP programme, promoting the exchange and development of knowledge.
