The Vertical Design Studio online teaching activities of the Architecture Course have been mentioned in the Tongji University Shanghai Joint Design Studio website https://jointdesignstudio.org/2020/04/09/jds-during-covid-19-time/ as a good practice to cope with Covid-19 restrictions.

The module has been entirely re-designed across the 3 Units thanks to the collaborative efforts of the module conveners – Dr. Hiroyuki Shinohara for Y3 and Dr. Jing Xie for Y2 – and of the unit leaders – Dr. Eugenio Mangi and Dr. Maycon Sedrez.

The Studio has been reshaped to fit the virtual environment: the usual design development process has been integrated with online activities and lectures to enhance students’ self-study and learning experience during this period of social distance and self-isolation measures.

In these particular circumstances, Unit 3 - lead by Dr. Mangi with Dr. Yat Ming Loo and the collaboration of Su Yimin and Hui Zhang - has re-started its work on Siping Community and Chifeng Road in Shanghai in the framework of the activities of the Joint Design Studio.

Among the requirements of the Design Studio, Y2 and Y3 students are asked to implement a plan for the conversion of their public buildings into small isolation spaces for the Covid-19 patients to enhance the urban resilience of Siping Community.
