Congratulations to Dr Dave Towey who has been awarded a Lord Dearing Award for Teaching and Learning for his outstanding contribution to the development of teaching and student learning.

Dr Dave Towey is currently an associate professor in the School of Computer Science, which he joined in September 2013. Dr Towey believes that students are major stakeholders in the teaching and learning experience, and that their opinion and feedback must guide teaching practice. His approach to supporting student learning is structured around their voice: through collecting students' expectations of undergraduate modules at the beginning of a semester, and engaging in open feedback and consultation throughout the semester, their hopes and views can be incorporated or addressed in the module delivery. Dr Towey also actively engages students in personal, partner-level relationships. Through the personal tutorials system, staff-student activities, and individual communications with students, Dr Towey constantly seeks input on how to improve not just his teaching, but also the entire UNNC experience for students.

The Lord Dearing Award scheme has been running since 1999. It was supported personally by Ronald Dearing, Lord Dearing the fifth Chancellor of The University of Nottingham and it has seen more than 200 members of staff receive an award for high quality teaching and the support of learning.

The scheme is overseen by Teaching and Learning Executive Group. The scheme’s judging panel consists of the Assistant Pro-Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, the Vice-Provosts for Teaching and Learning from UNNC and UNMC, senior members of staff and officers of the Student Union.
