Overview: This seminar will focus on tips for getting an academic job after graduating from the PhD program at UNNC. It will cover things like how to find out what jobs are available, how to prepare for an initial interview, how to prepare for a research talk, how to prepare for a sample teaching session, how to prepare for an interview panel / final interview, how to prepare for a campus visit, how to prepare for contract negotiations, etc. The talk will also cover common mistakes to avoid during the process of looking for a job. The talk will draw on the experience of Professor Fey in hiring over 55 full time faculty + 20 visiting faculty when Dean of NUBS China plus his experience from having worked in 7 countries in North America, Europe, and Asia and thus been involved in hiring decisions in diverse systems. The talk will focus around tips for getting jobs for faculty in business schools which is what Professor Fey knows most about, but some of what is discussed will be relevant for people in any academic discipline. This seminar will allow ample time for you to ask questions.


About the Speaker

Dr. Carl F. Fey is a Professor of Strategy at Bl Norwegian Business School in Oslo, Norway which he joined in September 2022. He is also an Affiliated Scholar at Boao Forum which is like the World Economic Forum for China. Fey is an elected fellow of the Academy of International Business and is recipient of the 2013 Journal of International Business Studies Decade Award which is an award given for the article published one decade ago which has had the largest influence on the field of international business. Fey was Deputy Editor of Management and Organization Review from 2017-2021.
