Overview: The workshop introduces the principles of student-centred pedagogy and illustrates the need for active learning approaches. It is divided into three main parts that look at: 1) theory-informed pedagogy; 2) the importance of constructive alignment in planning and delivering teaching; 3) Effective ways of checking if learning is taking place.


About the Speaker

Dr. Sebastian Kozbial has a strong background in teacher training and student-centred pedagogy, with extensive experience in curriculum development, assessment design, and academic mentoring.

As a Principal Fellow of Advance HE and a BALEAP Senior Fellow, Dr Kozbial has led professional development initiatives for educators across higher education. He has designed and delivered workshops on reflective practice, formative assessment, and action research, supporting colleagues in developing student-centred approaches to teaching and learning. Their leadership in mentoring and recognition schemes has helped numerous educators gain professional accreditation.

Dr Kozbial has held key roles in shaping teacher training programmes at institutions such as the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, University of Liverpool, and Manchester Metropolitan University. Their work includes developing CPD frameworks, mentoring early-career academics, and establishing observation-based teaching development schemes. He has also contributed to international conferences, publications, and external examiner roles (e.g. University of Bristol), ensuring best practices in pedagogy are shared widely.

Committed to research-informed teaching, Dr Kozbial advocates for inclusive and reflective pedagogical practices that enhance both staff development and student learning outcomes.
