Kent Matthews

Beyond Academia: Diverse Career Paths for PhD Graduates—Special Workshop by Prof. Kent Matthews Held at Ningbo Postgraduate Academic Festival
To help PhD students clarify career directions and broaden horizons, the 2026 Ningbo Postgraduate Academic Festival, Jointly supported by The Ningbo Association of Science and Technology (NAST) and Ningbo Social Science Association (NSSA), held a workshop on the afternoon of April 2 at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.
Prof. Kent Matthews, Visiting Professor of Banking at UNNC, delivered a speech themed Career Paths for PhD Graduates: Academia, Government, Industry and Research. More than 30 PhD students and young scholars attended the event. With over 30 years of academic and industrial experience, Prof. Matthews challenged the traditional stereotype that PhD graduates must pursue academic careers. He noted that modern doctoral training focuses on transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem‑solving and project management, which are highly valued in both academic and non‑academic fields.
Based on global employment data and real cases, he analyzed diverse career tracks and emphasized that non‑academic paths do not close the door to academia. He advised students to explore career options early, develop transferable skills and use AI tools to improve efficiency.
As a key activity of the festival, the lecture provided practical guidance for young researchers. The festival will continue to launch more high‑quality events to support the all‑round development of postgraduate students.
