The 2nd Sino-UK (Ningbo) Forum on Evidence-Based Medicine and the 2019 International Conference on Evidence-Based Medicine and Clinical Research Methods was held on 23rd November at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). The two-day research conference brought together about 200 scholars and professionals from China and the UK, to jointly discuss how evidence-based medicine can be used to improve health in China.
The event was hosted by the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and Zhejiang Provincial Nature Science Foundation of China and supported by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science at the University of Nottingham and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The main forum and eight sub-forums covered a wide range of areas including clinical guidelines, medicine stocks, TCM, cancer, smoking, hearing loss and tinnitus. Specialist workshops were also held on medical research methods and the latest implementation of science in evidence-based medicines for young medical researchers in China.
Professor Nick Miles OBE, Provost of UNNC welcomed all the participants, introduced and presented the University. “Evidence-based Medicine is driving widespread innovation in the practice of delivering quality healthcare in the 21st century. As a university, we seek to enhance academic collaboration between colleagues, between disciplines, between universities, and in this case between clinical physicians with the aim of raising the quality of effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare in China,” he said.
'The contribution made by UNNC in the field of healthcare was highly recognized,' said Mr Xia Guanbin, Senior Officer of the Ningbo Healthcare Commission, 'Together with UNUK and other high-quality international resources, UNNC has brought innovative Sino-UK exchange projects to Ningbo and successfully applied for a number of domestic and foreign research funds with local hospitals from 2013 to 2019.'
The keynote speeches also helped to raise awareness over some pressing concerns. Especially in regards to the talks on ‘Using Unannounced Standardized Patient in the Quality of Primary Health Care’ and ‘Screening Services for Breast Cancer in the UK’, which were delivered by Professor Xu Dong, Executive Deputy Director and Research Professor of the Sun Yat-sen Global Health Institute and Dr Chen Yan, Associate Professor at Centre for Cancer Sciences in UNUK, respectively. Their research is of great significance both in the innovation of medical education and the optimization of the medical system in China.
The Nottingham China Health Institute is dedicated to interdisciplinary research that links medicine, science and technology, social science, and business to meet the needs of the rapidly changing 21st-century health care system. The successful organisation of the Conference on Evidence-based Medicine not only helped to establish an international collaboration platform, but also integrated resources from home and abroad for the promotion of healthcare innovation in China.
