UNNC Establishes Nottingham Case Innovation Centre: A Leap Forward in Case Teaching

21 October 2023

The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) has recently announced the official establishment of the Nottingham Case Innovation Centre (NCIC), which will function under the remit of the Nottingham University Business School China (NUBS China). Its primary aim is to bolster the education quality at UNNC through the development and integration of research cases, which echo the latest trends, challenges, and practices within the business realm. By doing so, NCIC is dedicated to continuously enhancing the overall education quality at UNNC while fostering an environment of constant innovation in the field of case teaching.

In a bid to boost the growth of NCIC, UNNC is planning to forge alliances with other universities and leading research institutions. This collaborative approach will allow for the sharing of case resources and teaching experiences, the execution of joint research, and the development of cooperative projects, all aimed at enhancing the influence and competitiveness of case teaching.

On October 10, the NCIC team, led by Professor Philip Seltsikas, Vice-Provost for Education and Student Experience of UNNC, and Professor Kok Wei Khong, Dean of NUBS China, visited the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) and were warmly welcomed by Professor Wang Hong, the President of CEIBS and Professor Zhang Weijiong, the Vice President of CEIBS.

Established in 2001, the CEIBS Case Center is a globally recognized repository of case studies with a Chinese focus. UNNC, serving as an exemplar of Sino-British educational collaboration, is also a trailblazer in the domain of Sino-foreign cooperative education. Both institutions exchanged insights on the operation and evolution of their respective case centers and expressed optimism about the prospects of future mutual cooperation.

Dr. Huimin Song, Director of NCIC, declared: "Leveraging UNNC's premium resources in science, education, and industry, NCIC is poised to create a platform for teachers to refine their case writing skills and share pedagogical experiences."

NCIC is set to forge strategic alliances with businesses across a broad spectrum of industries, fostering a symbiotic relationship. On one side, this interactive partnership with the industry allows teachers to gain an in-depth understanding of real-world business operations, thereby facilitating the creation of high-caliber case studies that accurately mirror the realities of commerce. Conversely, these top-tier case studies can function as a guiding light and point of reference for aspects such as internal management, training, and industry trends within enterprises.

Furthermore, NCIC is committed to equipping teachers with an abundance of training resources. This includes the orchestration of high-grade case study-themed activities such as seminars and forums, providing a platform for teachers to engage in fruitful dialogue and share insights with businesses. Additionally, through comprehensive training curricula and the dissemination of practical experiences, teachers are empowered to employ case teaching methods more effectively, thereby igniting students' enthusiasm for learning and honing their critical thinking skills.

The launch of NCIC signifies a pivotal advancement in UNNC's case teaching approach. The center, with its philosophy rooted in openness and innovation, is poised to continuously drive the evolution and enhancement of case teaching.
