Note: For the 2+2 study model courses, the student will spend the last two years at our UK campus. For the 4+0 study model courses, the student will spend the entire degree programme in Ningbo, China with 'study abroad' opportunities from year three.

Entry requirements

Depending on your academic and English language qualifications, you may be eligible for a traditional three-year degree programme, or a four-year programme with a preliminary year enabling you to gain the subject-specific knowledge and skills required to embark on degree-level studies.

If you are a mainland Chinese student, your Gaokao score should be in the first division as a minimum requirement, and your English test score should be no less than 115/150. For more details, please check the Chinese version prospectus.

English language requirements 

If your first language is not English or your entry qualification was not obtained in the English medium (from an approved institution), then you are required to provide evidence of your proficiency in English.

Minimum requirements for the four-year programme:

  • IELTS 5.5 (no less than 5.0 in any element) or 
  • PTE Academic 59 (minimum 53) or
  • TOEFL (IBT) 80 (minimum 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking)

Minimum requirements for the three-year programme:

  • IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in writing) or
  • PTE Academic 71 (minimum 65) or
  • TOEFL (IBT) 90 (minimum 19 in Writing)

Minimum age requirements

You should be at least 18 years of age on admission to the University. The date of "admission" is defined as the first day of September in the relevant academic year. This requirement may be waived on an individual basis if your parents or guardians give their written agreement in advance to additional safeguards and requirements. Visit here for more information.

Course overview

The course is based on an equivalent programme at Nottingham, UK (L100 Economics). However, it will span four years rather than three to incorporate a Preliminary year which will predominantly cover English language skills.

The course provides training in the principles of economics and their application, knowledge about the workings of the economy, skills for the constructive use of that knowledge in a range of settings, analytical skills and an ability to develop simplifying frameworks for studying the real world.

The main aims of a degree programme in Economics are as follows:

  • To provide training in the principles of economics and their application
  • To stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead them to appreciate its application to a range of problems and its relevance in a variety of contexts
  • To provide a firm foundation of knowledge about the workings of the economy and to develop the relevant skills for the constructive use of that knowledge in a range of settings
  • To develop in students the ability to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired to the solution of theoretical and applied problems in economics
  • To equip students with appropriate tools of analysis to tackle issues and problems of economic policy
  • To develop in students, through the study of economics, a range of transferable skills that will be of value in employment and self-employment
  • To provide students with analytical skills and an ability to develop simplifying frameworks for studying the real world.
  • To provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can proceed to further studies in Economics, related areas or in multi-disciplinary areas that involve Economics

Course structure

The degree is offered as a three or four-year programme depending on your entry qualification.

  • For domestic students the course structure follows the Chinese higher education system and is based on a four-year program.
  • For international students, with relevant qualifications, the course structure follows the UK higher education system and is based on a three-year program.
