"Nobody can deny the significant roles journalists play in the information society where digital media, social media and platforms permeates our lives. In the highly mediated world, journalists still set the media and public agenda, shape and sway public opinion. Our Erasmus+ project aims to develop course programmes surrounding news reporting of UN's Sustainable Development Goals, targeting university students, academics and practicing journalists in China."

Sustainable Development Goals in Journalism Reporting (SDGs_JournalismReporting), Erasmus+ Key Action 2 Capacity Building in Higher Education programme (2009 – 2023)

The “Sustainable Development Goals in Journalism Reporting” project was launched in November 2019 and is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission. It is implemented by a consortium of nine (9) partners from six (6) countries: Spain, Romania, Luxembourg, Cambodia, Malaysia, and China.

All the project's activities revolve around developing a course program in HEIs that is sustainable and linked to the needs of the labour market and society. The innovative aspect of the SDGs Journalism Reporting (SDGsJR) project is, firstly, the incorporation and focus given to sustainable development goals on journalism reporting. It is a program based on the evidence which places free and independent media at the core of sustainable development. Its aim is unique as it places skills and knowledge on sustainable development at the core of high-quality journalism and its impact on government policies and public awareness. By learning how to monitor specific indicators of SDGs, journalists can develop compelling stories, and therefore decision-makers, civil society, and the public can be strongly influenced.

The project aims to enhance the capacity of reporting SDGs through training and teaching delivery amongst academic staff in partner countries' HEIs. Academic staff will be trained in teaching new specialized courses. This will aid them in developing a journalism curriculum focusing on sustainable development goals. They will be involved throughout the project's life cycle, including needs analysis, study visits, knowledge exchange, and the developing of a new course program. In addition, they will receive online training in innovative ICT-based teaching methodologies while learning about best practices in EU-HEIs.

End of the SDGsJR programme

SDGsJR-End-01

On 14 November 2023, the four-year Sustainable Development Goals in Journalism Reporting (SDGsJR programme) drew to an end. Funded by the European Union's Erasmus programme, the programme was carried out by a consortium of eight institutions in six countries - Spain, Romania, Luxembourg, Cambodia, China and Malaysia - with the University of Nottingham Ningbo as a key member of the team. Over the course of four years, the eight universities have worked together to explore the diverse possibilities of reporting on sustainability and to develop a journalism curriculum that is in line with the concept of sustainable development.

  • The principal activity of the programme is the creation, testing and adaptation of a 6/12-month journalism reporting course, that will be a collection of programs and contents designed to help prepare journalists, analysts and journalism students for working in a changing environment. During the process, challenges of local developmental has been high on the agenda.
  • SDGs Research Units have been established in the higher education institutions (HEIs) that provide relevant equipment and free access to information, statistics and tools for data processing, analysis, as well as monitoring of indicators to track progress of SDGs.
  • The development of an online digital reporting platform helps to promote and support lifelong learning and will strengthen the links between the academic and journalistic labour environments.
  • This programme has developed vocational courses for academic staff delivering journalism reporting courses as well as building the capacity of academic staff from the rest of the faculty.
  • The creation of synergies and support for networking and partnerships among academics, journalists and other relevant stakeholders will be of great value in creating high-quality reporting, prioritising the SDGs on national agendas, and raising public awareness.
