Note: For the 2+2 study model courses, the student will spend the last two years at our UK campus. For the 4+0 study model courses, the student will spend the entire degree programme in Ningbo, China with 'study abroad' opportunities from year three.

Entry requirements

Depending on your academic and English language qualifications, you may be eligible for a traditional three- year degree programme, or a four- year programme with a preliminary year. enabling The preliminary year enables you to gain the subject-specific knowledge and skills required to embark on degree-level studies.

If you are a mainland Chinese student, your Gaokao score should be in the first division as a minimum requirement, and your English test score should be no less than 115/150. For more details, please check the Chinese version prospectus.

English language requirements

If your first language is not English or your entry qualification was not obtained in the English medium (from an approved institution), you are required to provide evidence of your proficiency in English. Minimum requirements:

  • IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in writing) – eligible for three-year programme;
  • IELTS 5.5 (no less than 5.0 in writing) – eligible for four-year programme;
  • PTE Academic 62 (minimum 55) – eligible for three-year programme;
  • PTE Academic 55 (minimum 51) – eligible for four-year programme.

Minimum age requirements

You should be at least 18 years of age on admission to the University. The date of “"admission”" is defined as the first day of September in the relevant academic year. This requirement may be waived on an individual basis., Iif your parents or guardians give provide their written agreement, in advance, to additional safeguards and requirements. Course overview

Mechanical engineering is the broadest of all the engineering disciplines and graduates find employment in every sector of industry.

We apply our scientific knowledge to solving problems and designing machines that help us to enjoy a better lifestyle. We work in every sector of industry, in areas such as design, development, research, consultancy, and manufacture or marketing, combining technical and managerial expertise. 

The course provides an excellent foundation in engineering science and design and also offers opportunities to develop specialist knowledge in areas such as automotive and aerospace engineering.

Course structure

For domestic students, the course structure follows the Chinese higher education system. It is based on a four-year programme with the possibility of spending two years at the University of Nottingham's UK campus.

For international students, the course structure follows the UK higher education system. It is based on a three-year programme with the possibility of spending two years at the University of Nottingham's UK campus.

This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).  

Year 1 modules

The preliminary year is designed to help you develop your English language skills so that you can make the most of your degree programme.

This English language programme designed by the English for Academic Purposes experts at the University's Centre for English Language Education is carefully integrated with academic content modules so that you are prepared fully for years two to four of your degree programme.

*Note: This year is not compulsory for students with appropriate qualifications for year two entry.

Year 2 modules

Year two and three provide a grounding in the broad fundamentals of mechanical engineering science and engineering design. The science subjects studied include thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, dynamics and electro-mechanical systems. In design, the emphasis is on project work and in both the first and second years, you will undertake a design, make and test project, which you will manufacture in the department's student workshop.

A major individual project makes up a quarter of your studies. This may involve computational and or experimental investigations often related to research activities within the department. You will also study a mix of compulsory and optional modules, the latter allowing you to tailor the course to your interests.

Additional Course Choice: Additional course choice should be a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 20 credits from this group. Additional module choice should be a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 20 credits. Remaining credits to consist of any other relevant module approved by the course director. A maximum of 20 credits can be taken in topics that are not directly related to engineering and its applications, subject to approval by the course director.
