UNNC FoSE Success at ICOIE 2023

14 July 2023

The 2023 International Conference on Open and Innovative Education (ICOIE 2023) was held in Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) 4-6 July. This was the 10th conference in the series, and the first time to have it in person since the COVID pandemic.

UNNC had six papers accepted at ICOIE this year, five of which had authors from the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FoSE). Five UNNC colleagues attended in person (four from FoSE), and a couple of others presented online. Three of the FoSE papers included students as co-authors, which is in line with some of the previous FoSE ICOIE papers. This year, the FoSE paper by Boon Giin Lee, Matt Pike, Joseph Thenara (class of 2023) and Dave Towey ("Fighting Fires with Mixed Reality: The Future of Fire Safety Training and Education") won an Excellent Paper award.

FoSE has an excellent track record with ICOIE, including several Best/Excellent paper awards, and a large number of proceedings papers being invited to (and eventually published in) high-quality journals.

As a key element of some of the FoSE papers, collaboration with our undergraduate students in curricular and extra-curricular research --- including our Faculty Undergraduate Research Projects --- has been a very important part of the success of the papers and presentations (and, of course, the underlying projects and research). As one of the lead authors on a joint staff-student paper said: "Collaborating on papers with undergraduate students, despite the challenges posed by their limited experience in crafting writing styles, has been a truly enjoyable experience for me. I greatly admire their enthusiasm and dedication, and I look forward to engaging in further and deeper collaborations with ambitious and motivated students in the future."

Some comments from the FoSE team at ICOIE this year were:

"For me, the ICOIE conference serves as an excellent platform for sharing my research with peers from around the world. It also provides a great opportunity for networking and keynotes from the leaders in the field of educational technology. It has been a prosperous and rewarding experience participating in this years ICOIE conference."

"Attending ICOIE this year was an amazing experience. It marked the first time I presented my research in person since the pandemic began. I had the opportunity to meet new people, showcase my research, and hold productive meetings with my collaborators in Hong Kong. Overall, it was a truly memorable event."

"It has been another excellent ICOIE. It was great to meet many of the ICOIE community in person again, for the first time since COVID. The keynotes, panels, and parallel sessions offered a lot of interesting ideas; and the in-person discussions will surely lead to new collaborations and projects. UNNC/FoSE were again very high profile, and our presentations attracted a lot of good questions and suggestions. We're looking forward to ICOIE 2024."

The authors gratefully acknowledge the support provided by FoSE through the FoSE T&L Conference Research grants.
