On 4^th May 2023, a group of undergraduate students from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham Ningbo visited one underground station construction site of Line 8 of Ningbo Rail Transit. The site mainly includes two deep excavation pits, currently under construction by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd. With a depth of 31 meters, one of the excavation pits is the deepest excavation pit in Ningbo.

The students were warmly welcomed and given a guided tour accompanied by the project manager and engineers from the construction company, who explained the design and construction process of diaphragm walls and steel supports of the pits. Though the guided tour and the communications with the engineers and Dr. Wang, students were able to identify key components of the retaining walls and understand their working principles. Student were also introduced about deformation monitoring and control techniques for retaining walls.

Overall, the site visit provided students with valuable practical experience in the design, construction, and management of retaining wall structures.
