Graduate School invites a certain number of outstanding scholars from universities worldwide to give informative lectures and workshops on academic research and career planning. This series aims to provide our PhD students the access to scholars with a high degree of expertise, as well as the opportunity to better understand research methods and achieve productive outcomes.
2022 Lecture review
Exploring (Organizational) Ethnography between Toolbox and World-Making
Overview: In this workshop, we will discuss research that follows the ethnographic tradition of examining “culture” through a close observation of people in social contexts. Challenges of ethnographic research are many and varied and include questions of how to gain access to culturally sensitive or sites; becoming ‘invisible’, how to observe and listen, disengaging, how to document and analyze ethnographic data.

Ziyun Fan is Associate Professor in Organization Studies in the School for Business and Society at the University of York, UK. Her research interests locate within organizational theory broadly and have a sociological and historical focus. Drawing on qualitative and ethnographic approaches, she is fascinated by the ‘irregularities’ and ‘peculiarities’ in our everyday organizational life and has explored topics such as organizational secrecy, communication, gossip, silence, temporality, and space.
Ziyun has a BA (Hons) in International Business Management from the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China and an MA in Management and Organizational Analysis from the University of Warwick. She obtained her PhD in Management from Royal Holloway, University of London in September 2018.
A Gentle Introduction to MATLAB
Overview: The workshop aims to equip PhD students with the necessary skills to use MATLAB for data analysis and visualization.
The workshop covers four topics:

MATLAB basics: The GUI of MATLAB, the basic programming logic and syntax in MATLAB. Data types and their corresponding operations.

Programming with scripts: Programming using MATLAB script files. Matrix-based programming using conditional statements and loops.

MATLAB functions: basic about functions; writing MATLAB used-defined functions.

Visualization and plotting: visualizing data with various types of plots.

Dr. Yifan Li joined the Alliance Manchester Business School as a Lecturer in Finance in 2018. His research interest mainly lies in the field of econometric theory and its applications in finance. The themes of his works include the analysis of high-frequency data using alternative sampling schemes and functionals, high-frequency option data, non-parametric moment estimators, market microstructure, the impact of news in the financial market, etc. His publications appear in international journals such as Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Economic Dynamics & Control, Journal of Financial Econometrics, Journal of Financial Markets, etc.
Introduction to Analytical Modelling Techniques and Their Uses for Publications
Overview: This session aims at helping you master the basics of analytical modelling techniques that can be applied to make informed decisions in the domain of business management. Specifically, a classic, highly appraised, and well-cited research paper from Management Science (Chiang, Chhajed and Hess, 2003) will be used to explain step-by-step how to develop a game-theoretical model to make important marketing and operations management decisions. Subsequently, several other papers from prestigious journals will be reviewed briefly so that you can better understand some patterns of deploying such analytical models for publications. Finally, the speaker will organise a roundtable discussion to talk about her own PhD journey and engage the audiences to discuss their PhD challenges and share their experience and ideas.

Dr. Lina Zhang is a lecturer in Operations Management at the University of Exeter Business School. Prior to joining Exeter in September 2022, she was a Teaching Fellow at Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) China after obtaining her doctorate degree at the University of Nottingham.
Dr. Zhang's research interests focus on retail operations in the digital era, particularly concerning the omni-channel retail operations and operations management with social technologies. Her research has been published in the International Journal of Production Economics and Journal of Strategic Marketing.
Correlation or Causation? Research Design for Causal Inference
Overview: This workshop focuses on how to design robust research to reveal “cause and effect” relationships. It provides an overview of causality and covers main methodologies for causal inference. It also includes an application example with multiple methods employed. The goal of the workshop is to help participants improve their own research design to approach empirical questions.

Dr. Anqi (Angie) Wu is an assistant professor of Information System and Business Analytics at Florida International University, College of Business. Her research focuses on applying data-intensive analysis to approach societal problems. The overall goal of her research is to discover ways in which government agencies and public organizations can be more successful in their efforts toward increasing social welfare.
Dr. Wu received Ph.D. in Business Administration from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Gies College of Business. She earned a master’s degree in Business Analytics from Rensselaer Polytechnic University and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Zhejiang University of Technology, China. She also had industry experience before joining her Ph.D. program.
