On 29th September, two student teams from the School of Computer Science, won the 2021 Yinzhou 3rd Big Data Innovative Application Competition organized by Yinzhou Big data Development Service Center and Ningbo Big Data Bureau.
There were two rounds of the competition. After the preliminary selection, Dr. Zheng Lu’s team, consists of 5 computer science year 4 undergraduate students, Yanbing Luo, Sihan Lu, Qicheng Chen, Longwen Hu, Zhuopu Wang, with their project entitled “NLP Healthcare – Medical Triage Chatbot”, won the only first prize. Their project aimed to develop a software that can get the patient's description of symptoms through daily chat, determine the type and severity of the disease, provide reasonable registration suggestions, and automatically complete a series of processes such as online appointment registration and navigation once the patient's permission is granted. Dr. Qian Zhang’s team, consists of 6 computer science year 4 undergraduate students, Zhihao Li, Wei Long, Zimo Guo, Yining Chen, Ye Zhao, Yunuo Zhao, with their project entitled “Intelligent Traffic Monitoring System, Qianliyan”, won the second prize. Their project aimed to enhance Ningbo traffic department's enforcement by utilizing the surveillance video and map API provided by Ningbo government and develop the algorithms for a series of tasks like vehicle detection, tracking and driver behavior detection.
Both the two projects were the extend versions of computer science year 3 Software Engineering Group Project (GRP). In GRP, each team spent the whole year starting from scratch to design, program and document a computer application. During this process, students were able to incorporate the most up-to date technologies in the area of computer science, such as operation research, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, human computer interaction and embedded system as well as gaining hands on software engineering experiences at the same time.
School of Computer Science shall continue helping students transfer the theoretical knowledge into practical application in the future.
