According to the most recent statistical data for the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database unveiled by the global professional information services company Clarivate Analytics, a new subject - the subject of Environment/Ecology - of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) has entered ESI's prestigious global top 1% subject list.
Up to now, UNNC has five subjects - Economic & Business, Engineering, Environment/Ecology, Materials Science, and Social Sciences, General - ranked in the top 1% of global rankings of ESI, spanning across the university's three faculties. The number of subjects listed ranks second among Sino-foreign universities.
This accomplishment highlights UNNC's exceptional research capabilities in relevant fields and enhances its influence and reputation in the global academic community.
In recent years, UNNC has continuously strengthened its subject construction and improved its research capabilities. For instance, the ESI global ranking of Engineering has moved from the top 1% in 2019 to 0.5% in 2021 and further to 0.23% as of September this year, achieving a remarkable advancement; the ranking of Social Sciences, General has risen to 0.44%; the global ranking of Economics and Business has risen to 0.85%, and Materials Science to 0.92%. Meanwhile, UNNC has steadily improved its overall global ranking to the top 0.28%.

Currently, 100% of the academic staff have teaching or research experience at top international universities, and around 60% are foreign nationals or from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Notably, in the latest "World's Top 2% Scientists" list, 39 UNNC scholars are included in the single-year database and 21 scholars in the career-long database. Moreover, nine scholars are included in the 2023 "Highly Cited Chinese Researchers" list.
Led and propelled by these accomplished academics, the university's subjects and scientific research experiences consistent high-quality advancement. Data from the 2024 SciVal database shows that the Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) for UNNC's Environment/Ecology subject has reached 1.67, comparable to top universities like Harvard University (1.68), Cornell University (1.62) and C9 League universities (1.64). Furthermore, the quality and citation of publications on the Environment/Ecology subject notably excel, with 52.8% of papers published in the top 10% of journals worldwide and 22.0% of papers ranking in the top 10% by citation count, surpassing that of the prestigious universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.
