On 24 September 2024, the list of winners of the 2023 Ningbo Science and Technology Awards was announced. Professor Giampaolo Buticchi from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was honoured with the “Ningbo Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award” for his ground-breaking contributions in the fields of renewable energy system and green transportation.

Professor Buticchi is the Interim Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering. He is the Director of the provincial-level international joint laboratory (Zhejiang-Germany Joint Laboratory on Smart Grid Technologies of UNNC) and a leading figure at the Key Laboratory for More Electric Aircraft Technology of Zhejiang Province. Additionally, he is the former Chair of the Technical Committee of Renewable Energy Systems of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society and an IEEE Industrial Electronics Society AdCom Member-at-large.

Professor Buticchi has consistently focused his research on power electronics, particularly in renewable energy systems, green transportation, high-reliability lightweight motor drive control. To date, he has published over 300 articles in international academic journals and conferences, with his papers cited more than 7,000 times on Scopus. He has also been listed by Elsevier as one of the “Top 2% of Scientists Worldwide” for four consecutive years.

In the field of renewable energy systems, Professor Buticchi has been a pioneer, proposing the improvement of grid compliance through low DC current injection and developing new modulation strategies to limit ground leakage current. Moreover, he has made significant contributions to the application of solid-state transformers in medium-voltage settings, opening up new areas of research in smart transformers and power system wiring. These research achievements have not only introduced new perspectives and breakthroughs in academia but have also demonstrated significant value in industrial applications.

Renewable energy systems and green transportation are of great significance in achieving the “Dual Carbon” goals in China and around the world. When discussing how these research outcomes can be translated into practical applications, Professor Buticchi explained,

The key aspect is bridging the gap between university research and the high level of technology readiness required by the industry. Continuous engagement with relevant companies is essential to understand their needs and align university capabilities with their challenges.

Professor Buticchi

Professor Buticchi hopes to support the future generation of power and transportation systems by driving the development and application of cutting-edge technology, creating smarter and more reliable power systems, and achieving more efficient energy use and lower carbon emissions through intelligent and reliable electronic devices, thereby providing better services for industry and humanity.

The “Ningbo Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award” is established by the Ningbo Science and Technology Bureau to recognise young scientific and technological talents under the age of 40 who have made significant discoveries in research, achieved innovative breakthroughs in key core technology development, or made major contributions to promoting the scientific and technological innovation and development of enterprises.
