UNNC expert touted as potential Italian PM
Sky News Italia speculate on the next Prime Minister of Italy
An expert at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China is reportedly on a shortlist of candidates to be named the new Prime Minister of Italy.
Michele Geraci, Head of China Economic Policy Programme at UoN Business School China (NUBS China), has been touted in the media as one of four possible candidates to become Italian Prime Minister, two months after the country held a general election.
The two winning parties – Lega and the Five Star Movement - have since been locked in talks to establish a workable coalition government. Several media outlets have speculated that Michele, an expert on the Chinese economy and international finance, would be a suitable non-political choice, acceptable to both parties.
However, Michele has been keen to play down speculation linking him with the appointment. “For me, the important thing is that Italian policymakers are finally taking a strong stance in matters related to China,” he said. “There are opportunities for ever stronger relations between Italy and China, and no matter who the next government will be, I hope we’ll continue along this path of mutual respect and stronger commercial and cultural ties.”
Martin Lockett, Head of NUBS China, reflected that the press speculation was testament to the quality of the academic personnel at UNNC. “We’re delighted that Michele's name has been linked with the job of Italian Prime Minister,” he said. “It shows not only the quality and public recognition of our faculty but also the relevance of the research and policy development activity at NUBS China.”
The new Italian Prime Minister is expected to be named later this week.
