University launches Blockchain Laboratory
The signing ceremony of the new Blockchain Laboratory - built jointly by the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) and Ningbo Free Trade Zone - was held at UNNC on 21st December 2018.
A blockchain is a growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked using cryptography. The laboratory’s mission is to advance the research and development of blockchain-based technologies for use in Business, Finance, Economics and all other areas of potential impact.
Mr. Zhimeng Lu, Deputy Director of Ningbo Free Trade Zone, stressed the importance of the new Blockchain Laboratory. “Zhejiang Province and Ningbo city regard the digital economy as the number one project,” he said. “The integration of the digital economy and traditional industries has become an essential new driving force for economic growth. Talents and digital technologies are becoming core competitive areas for innovation driven development and industrial transformation and upgrading.”
UNNC Provost Professor Chris Rudd added “the new platform pulls in UNNC’s excellence in business, economics, IT, mathematics and statistics. What we are building here is a centre of excellence for the city.”
The Blockchain Laboratory aims to bring in talent from China and overseas, reach out to industry and the public sector and to train talent to drive new industry and business. It hopes to create wealth and employment opportunities as well as enhance local reputations to help support Ningbo’s and Zhejiang Province’s development strategies.
