PhD Programme

 

 

The PhD programme offers flexible supervision between the University of Nottingham Ningbo China and the University of Nottingham (UK). Students will be registered at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, and graduates will be awarded a University of Nottingham (UK) degree, which is also recognised by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Depending on the proposed area of research, students may be required to spend part of their studies at the University of Nottingham (UK). Supervision between the campuses will be settled for each individual student. 

 

Current research areas of supervisors

Currently, we are prepared to support potential projects in the following areas:

  • intercultural, business and professional communication, including meeting interactions, gender, conflict, problem solving and decision making, and English for healthcare professionals
  • psycho- or neurolinguistics, particularly in regard to second language processing using EEG
  • relational language (or politeness) in spoken or digital discourse, English or Chinese
  • learner corpus research, language testing and assessment, second language writing, English for academic purposes, and vocabulary
  • media translation, sociocultural meanings of translation, translation of culture-related texts, conference interpreting, and pedagogy in translation and interpreting
  • gender and translation, translation of feminist or women’s writing, memory and translation, translation (in) history, museum text translation
  • bilingual language development and assessments, motivational studies of young learners of English
  • qualitative research using metaphor and narrative analyses
  • systemic functional linguistic approaches to unique data, particularly literary or dramatic texts
  • multimodal interaction, particularly in the Chinese pedagogical context
  • agency in language
  • English language teaching
  • syllabus and curriculum design
  • language policy and planning
  • global Englishes
  • technology assisted language learning
