UNNC students won the first Chinese character chess game against Ningbo University

13 May, the Chinese Character Chess Game between UNNC and Ningbo University was held in Teaching Building 119. UNNC students Xichen Zhao, Zike Li, and Xiuya Li won the first 3 places amongst 20 candidates from both UNNC and NBU. The competition was jointly held by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Yinzhou District People’s Government, Nottingham Confucius Institute China Ningbo Branch, Ningbo University and Ningbo Chinese Character Research Centre.


Mr Genzhu Zhang Deputy director of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Yinzhou District People’s Government, Mr Kevin Lin Director of Global Engagement Office UNNC, Prof Wenbing Song Deputy dean of Faculty of Humanities and Communication NBU, Prof Haiying Mao Faculty of Humanities and Communication NBU, Mr Zhifu Ren Director of Chinese Character Research Centre attended the competition and delivered welcome speech.

The UNNC team consists of 3 international students (Jo-yen, Daisy Fin and Ngan Li) and 7 Chinese students (Xichen Zhao, Zike Li, Xiuya Li, Zhiheng Huang, Zhe Hua, Yibei Wang, and Yinxuan Peng). With only one week’s training, the competitors showed excellent performance in the competition.



UNNC student Siyu Yu, as the president of chess club, had made vital efforts to promote the game and train candidates. She found the Chinese Character Chess game interesting and easy to learn, and could be a helpful tool to encourage Chinese character leaners including those young kids in primary school. She said that she would try to introduce it to the primary school in Gansu where she work as a volunteer teacher during the summer vacation.

It is planned to hold the second competition between UNNC and NBU in the Autumn semester. Once confirmed, detailed time and venue will be circulated to UNNC international students and staff.
