Job opportunities in unlikely places
Torben, who is originally from Germany, first came to China on a six-month internship during his bachelors degree. He was so impressed with the country’s energy and opportunities that he returned to study MSc International Management so that he could earn a masters in English, while getting to know more about China.
With his course providing him with a wide range of business skills and experience, Torben found that Ningbo was the perfect place for putting these into action. The opportunity to meet and socialise with people from all over the world led Torben to land his first job in China – he met his current boss in an Irish bar in Ningbo!
“Here in China social meetings can often turn into professional opportunities and that’s really exciting,” he says.
He now works for TECCO Ltd in Ningbo, a trading company that sources products from in and around Ningbo to sell to customers in France, Belgium and the UK. On a daily basis he deals with suppliers in China liaising with them over customers’ requirements, quality control and delivery, as well as organising the shipping of parts from Ningbo’s huge port.
Torben, who has plans to stay in China long-term, says: “It’s a really broad job, which requires cultural understanding of both Europe and China, as well as knowledge of how business and trade works. It can be hard work but our company is expanding and it’s fantastic to be here at this time.
“I had wanted to stay in China after finishing my studies so I was really pleased that a chance meeting in a bar turned into a job!”
