Personal profile

Dr. Linjun Xie is an Assistant Professor in Sustainable Urbanism at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). She has a background in urban planning, and her interdisciplinary research focuses on the governance of urban sustainability transitions. In particular, her work explores various urban sustainability experiments including nature-based solutions and smart eco-city in addressing urban biodiversity, climate, and societal challenges. She received the Green Talents Award in 2017, and she was a visiting scholar at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society in 2018. Before joining UNNC, she worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Geography at Durham University. She currently serves as a Lead-Author of the IPBES Nexus Assessment report. Till December 2022, she has published more than twenty articles in top peer-reviewed journals, including Environmental Science & Policy, Political Geography, Journal of Urban TechnologyCities,  Journal of Cleaner Production, and Environmental and Planning E: Nature and Space.

Research Interests

Dr. Linjun Xie’s research interests have covered: urban sustainability transitions, environmental governance, political ecology, critical smart/eco urbanism, nature-based solutions, and social and environmental justice.

She has worked on two international research projects:

  • 2016-2018: ESRC/NSFC/DFG/NOW/ANR co-funded research project – ‘Smart eco-cities for a green economy: a comparative study of Europe and China’ (http://www.smart-eco-cities.org/)
  • 2019-2021: EU Horizon 2020 Programme – ‘NATURVATION: Nature Based Urban Innovation’ project (https://naturvation.eu/)
