My specialism comprises English Language Teaching with accent on the teaching of EAP, English Linguistics, and Applied Linguistics. I focus on understanding and elucidating classroom interactive input and learning with emphasis on outcomes for the learner.

Sociolinguistics and the application of linguistic measures towards solving language, education, ethnic and related problems in multilingual communities.

Personal profile

I joined the School of Education, UNNC, which is now the School of Education & English, as Assistant Professor in September 2018, after teaching at the university’s Centre for English Language Education (CELE) from September 2013 to August 2018. While in CELE, UNNC, I taught on the then School of Education MA TESOL programme, and on the MA Applied Linguistics course of the then School of English, UNNC. Prior to joining UNNC, I taught ESOL/EFL in the United Kingdom (UK) at Manchester College; and EAP at the University of Manchester, the University of Bolton and the University of Bradford. I have also been an examiner for Cambridge ESOL (speaking and listening) and I have liaised with UK ESOL and EAP standardisation bodies such as ASCENTIS and the British Council. This is in addition to training teachers in the UK towards the Certificate/Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS, DTLLS).

Preceding work in the UK, I taught at the Department of English, University of Jos, Nigeria. My PhD research at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, focused on language attitudes and implications for English as a second language in the language learning and language planning contexts. I then proceeded to the Institute of Linguistics, J.W. Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany, for post-doctoral research in bilingualism and language contact as a fellow of the German Academic Exchange (DAAD). I have also won the Ford Foundation research grant to study language contact and conflict.
