描述
What are the connections between the translator’s gender identity, the sociocultural context, and the translation? How the translators’ gender identities and sociocultural factors influenced the Chinese translations of The Second Sex, and the English translation (Parshley 1952) of Le Deuxième Sexe (Beauvoir 1949)?

Four Chinese translations of this twentieth-century feminist classic will be compared in order to understand to what extent the gender identity of the translator and the sociocultural context can make a difference in translation, with a special attention to translation of the lesbian content, particularly in ‘The Lesbian’ chapter.

Lily Yu holds a PhD in Translation and Intercultural Studies. She is assistant professor of Translation Studies in the School of International Communications. She is author of Translating Feminism in China: Gender, Sexuality and Censorship (2015, Routledge).
